The People That Time Forgot

If you like big fake dinosaurs–and who doesn’t?–this is the movie for you. Patrick Wayne stars as the intrepid Major Ben McBride, searching the Arctic for his lost friend. Sarah Douglas is at his side as Charly, the spunky lady photographer with a dainty puckish streak. As luck would have it, they come across a tropical zone that is home to big fake dinosaurs, surly Neanderthals, and nubile cavewomen with truly astonishing cleavage. Ah, but if only it were that simple. An evil rival tribe has been exterminating the gentle cave people and must be stopped. Whatever else you may want to say about producers Samuel Z. Arkoff and John Dark, they simply do not skimp on explosions. The People That Time Forgot has a detonation-filled corker of an ending that leaves the cast absolutely showered with dirt clods. Highly entertaining. –Ali Davis

2 Stars Mostly for Laughs and a Youthful Sarah Douglas
“The People That Time Forgot” (1977) is the sequel to “The Land That Time Forgot (1975). Both titles were borrowed from Edgar Rice Burroughs along with the basic premise, a prehistoric tropical paradise in the heart of Antarctica; inhabited by dinosaurs and cavemen. Burroughs detailed how volcanic activity kept the region warm and how a rim of mountains protected the land from the frozen temperatures that surrounded it. The film does not bother to include these scientific details nor much else from the original Burrough’s stories so don’t think less of him just because some hacks borrowed his idea and make this movie.
The movie features an expedition to find Bowen Tyler (Doug McClure) the main character in the 1975 film. The rescue effort is not exactly massive, it is a tiny four person expedition led by Tyler’s childhood friend Major Ben McBride (John Wayne’s son Patrick). The pairing of these two actors was probably an effort to demonstrate to the world that there was actually an actor out there with less talent than McClure. Wayne peaked at age 18 with a bit part as the youthful Lt. Greenhill in his dad’s film “The Searchers” and mysteriously managed to find a succession of acting opportunities in vehicles so bad that even he could not damage them to any great extent.
The bottom line is that this movie works best as a mock party feature; complete with laughably bad special effects, Saturday matin

Escape From the Planet of the Apes
User Ratings and Reviews
3 Stars Human See Human Do
“Escape From The Planet Of The Apes”
is part of the the classic SciFi
movie series begun with the great
“Planet Of The Apes”.
Three “apes” arrive in the pop culture
America of 1973 (?) from a future where
apes are the dominant and intellectually superior
species, able to communicate by spoken
language (English), and humans are as beasts.
Upon their escape, they witness the destruction
of the earth due to a weapon of warfare
created by humans and used by apes.
This film provides a thematic bridge in the
movie series, but also stands on its own.
It is both comic and tragic.
It is notable for trotting out the social
and political concerns as defined by the
pop media of the period in a
heavy-handed way and trivializing
them with humor at the same time.
The great thing about this film is that
it gives one numerous themes to consider.
It is serious and rich with meaning
while at the same time campy and fun
and ultimately tragic.
Among the interesting ideas presented are:
- submission to God’s will…
- danger of political zealotry…
- ends justifying the means…
- analogy between “apes” and the negroid race…
- trumping of absolute truth by majority vote…
- modesty in dress vs. exhibitionism…
- pacifism vs. just use of violence…
- use of animals…
- truth telling and omission…
…and on and on
The film is a great vehicle for discussion
and a definite candidate for repeated viewing.
Sure, the ape costumes are rather silly,
but so what;
we know they are not real apes anyway.
Last, but certainly not least, is the
great, great, great musical score
by Jerry Goldsmith. Wow!
Good plot, interesting characters,
campy humor, serious themes, great music,
action; what’s not to like?
4 Stars Reversal of roles
Now it’s the apes who can talk in a human society as three of them fly to the United States from Earth’s far future.
An interesting story, it uses the only two likeable characters from Ape City to deal with humanity. Lots of laughs and social barbs but not one of the best of the series. The plot device that gets the apes to the past is pretty weak too. A must-see though, if you’ve watched the other movies.
5 Stars NOT FOR CHILDREN. LIKE SOME PEOPLE THINK
This installment in the POTA series is not as child friendly as some reviewers would have you believe. Despite the lighthearted scenes of Zira speaking for the first time to the unexpected, the presidential inquiry, and the apes tour of the city. This movie has a serious and sometimes grim tone with a sad and tragic ending that may upset some children. I would recommend that you watch this in it’s entirety first before you decide if this is suitable for your children. There is no nudity or profanity, so it’s safe in that respect. I saw this for the first time when I was roughly 13 years old and the ending traumatized me to no end. I may have been a little extra sensetive then, but to this day I can not forgive Eric Braeden. He played the part of Otto Hasslein too well.
5 Stars Planet of the Apes
I wasted good money going to see the remake of Planet of the Apes, so I decided I needed to watch the original movie. I bought the whole collection and stayed up all night ‘just like I did when I was a teenager’, to watch them all in a row. The special effects are not up to today’s standards that’s true, but the story line doesnt get lost in today’s political correctness like the remake did. I enjoyed them very, very much.
4 Stars THE BEST OF THE SEQUELS, BUT DON’T THINK ABOUT IT TOO LONG!
OK, None of the sequels measure up to the original, but this is the best of the sequels. It is done with some humor as it should be, because at this point the whole plot is skating on very thin ice! The movie is funny, tragically sad and interesting, just don’t think about it too long afterwards. I am a fan of the series and I’m being generous with my rating. The DVD transfer looks great. If your a fan of the series you want them all!

2 Stars HD Net World Report-Shuttle Discovery
The title is misleading as too much of the video is NOT HD, but regular, lower quality video, and is a disappointement on large screen HD TV–EJV
5 Stars Scored Big With The Man of the House
A gift for my husband. He said it has exceptional visual appeal and extremely great Blu-Ray quality. If you are married to a gearhead….!!! Great price.
2 Stars Do not buy it if you like HDTV
I ordered this item and was very impressed by the first 2 minutes. But then, the whole documentary was captured in Standard Definition with a HDTV Wallpaper. It look’s like crap and that’s it !.
I was deeply dissapointed !
4 Stars HDNet World Report - Shuttle Discovery’s Historic Mission
This disc offers a Hi Definition glimpse of the Space Shuttle Discovery, though very little of the more interesting footage is not shot in HD. Most of the preflight interviews are in HD, while most of the actual mission is in standard definition. I bought this BD expecting amazing visuals of the earth and shuttle in orbit, but alas none are to be found here. The feature itself is encoded in MPEG 2 which while stunning and high in detail, suffers from smearing associated with the codec. The newer AVC/MPEG 4 codec would have be a better choice. Check Casino Royale out for quality. A good buy if you like NASA related documentaries. A let down if your looking for stunning HD orbital vistas.
1 Star Blu Ray Version of Shuttle Discovery Mission
I was a little disappointed in the amount of HD footage displayed on this disc. I would tell anyone interested in HD video of the Space shuttle, you may be a little short changed. Many of the video scenes in space are in 480i with borders, the only HD video will be the takeoff and brief astronaut preparation shots. The disc is an excellent history package for space shuttle buffs.

Disney DVD Game World Dogs Edition

Disney DVD Game World Dogs Edition

The traditional board game gets a fun new update in this interactive Disney DVD “Blue Ribbon Challenge” game that allows one to four players to choose a Disney dog character, spin, move around a virtual game board, answer trivia questions, scrutinize video clips, and play chance games right on their television sets. The three-dimensional game board features a virtual spinner; scenes from Oliver & Company, Mickey’s Toon Town, Lady and the Tramp, 101 Dalmatians, and the Fox and the Hound; and everything from the classic ball under the moving cup trick to video clips from classic Disney dog movies. While there are two levels of play, even the easiest family level poses trivia questions that will prove difficult for children younger than 7 years or any player who hasn’t seen virtually every Disney movie with a dog in the main character list. With over 1200 trivia questions and 15 different categories of game play, every game is a new game. Cynics might call this game just a glorified bonus feature that’s missing the main presentation, but young gamers are more likely to call it the next generation in board games. –Tami Horiuchi

3 Stars Great When Working
Very fun game, my son likes it a lot. Most of the time though, it does not go back and forth for turns. It gives one player (or the other) many turns at a time.
4 Stars Whoopee! This is fun!
For this who enjoyed the trivia game on the “Lady and the Tramp” DVD this game is for you. Here the game play is very much the same except there are bonus mini games, video clues, and some time limit questions which makes it more challenging. However there is a trial version on the “The Fox and the Hound 2″ DVD. So therefore if you already have “The Fox and the Hound 2″ get this DVD game to complete the set. Here this game is family friendly to all ages including me. I am thinking about the Princess Edition later.
4 Stars ITS DOG GONE FUN
Ever wanted a trivia game that young and old alike can play together?
You knopw there are games that seem so simple for adults and complex for kids. Well I just played with Disney Dogs and had a great time.
Next to Lassie, Walt Disney studios is the greatest doggy film-maker of all time. Every dog from 101 Dalmations to goofy is covered here in trivia.
Its fun and for families & Disney Buffs alike
So dog gone wild for these dogs
Bennet Pomerantz AUDIOWORLD
4 Stars Fun but a little tough - but still fun!
This is really neat. You can choose to play as several different Disney Dogs on this virtual board game. You use your DVD control to choose your dog and also to spin the spinner to see if you can move 1, 2, 3,4 spaces. You earn blue ribbons by answering dog questions that can be from any Disney movie with dogs. There are 2 ways you can play family or expert
(I think it’s called). We’ve played the family and it’s hard. And when you get an answer wrong it doesn’t tell you the correct answer. It’s a little frustrating for our 4 year old, but she does want to play and she knows to stay way from Sneaky Pete’s square which makes you loose a ribbon or other squares you might loose a turn. It is a cute game and a must for those who love Disney Dog movies!
